The Filipino-American Trombonist, Composer, and Educator is bringing a new energy and authenticity to the Bay Area through his compositions, improvisation, and teaching.

Hailed as “[one of the] San Francisco Young Lions” by Ulysses Owens Jr., Carlo’s soulful and powerful sound, inspired by both the traditional and modern elements of jazz, captures everything he loves about music: the raw excitement, adrenaline, musical communication, and emotional connection with both musicians and the audience.

His latest project, The Carlo Rabano Chordless Trio, perfectly represents this musical belief through the harmonic freedom and rhythmic intensity that the unconventional configuration of jazz trombone-bass-drums provides.

Along with this uncontrollable excitement as both a bandleader and sideperson, Carlo has made it his mission to unite his two biggest passions…

…his culture and music, into a unique compositional fusion so deeply personal and expressive. His capstone project at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, The Carlo Rabano Ten-tet, fused together every aspect of his journey up to that point: traditional jazz Big Band arranging techniques, thematic compositional maturity, jazz improvisation and tradition, cultural identity, and Filipino folk music.

Carlo has shared the stage with many greats…

…hailing from both the Bay, New York, and from across the globe including Ulysses Owens Jr, Steven Lugerner, Adam Klipple, Arthur Verocai, and Vladimir Cetkar, and has performed at venues across the Bay such as SFJAZZ, the Black Cat, the Dawn Club, Mr Tipples, Bird and Beckett Books, and The UC Theater.

Graduating from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the Roots, Jazz, and American Music program in 2025…

… with a Bachelors of Music, Carlo teaches privately to all ages, focusing on growing individual student's musical desires, goals, and interests. He regularly coaches and recruits for the Stanford Jazz Workshop’s middle school programs.

Carlo professionally crosses genres…

…performing in funk/reggae/salsa/cover bands throughout the Bay, annually with the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, as well as in the pit orchestra and in the studio to record for independent film and audio projects, and video games such as Counterstrike 2.

An active community member, Carlo has also performed…

for San Francisco events such as the Tenderloin Community Benefit District, SFJAZZ Galas, Lower Haight Street Art Walk, and private events such as weddings, house concerts, and cocktail hours.

Keep your ears open!

You may never know where you’ll hear Carlo, but you’ll know it when you hear it!
